Frequently visited or very productive areas:

AD = Aspro Dam (eastern end including the meadow and reedbed at the lake shore below


AP = Aspro Pools (small pools below Asprokremnos Dam)

ASL = Akrotiri Saltlake, including the shallow pools along Ladys Mile Beach

CS = Caravan-site near Bath of Aphrodite, Akamas Peninsula

PH = Paphos Headland

PR = Phassouri Reedbeds on Akrotiri Peninsula

VNI = Vasilias Nikoklis Inn

Littel grebe: common in fresh water lakes

Shag: seems to be common on the coast wherever there is rocky islets or steep rockfaces

Night heron: AP; PR

Squacco heron: common at fresh water lakes + on rocky islets just east of Paphos harbour

Cattle egret: PR; AP; PH

Little egret: PR

Grey heron: PR; AP; Nata ford; PH

Purple heron: Nata ford; PR; AP; AD; PH

Glossy ibis: PR

Flamingo: Larnaca Salt Lake; ASL

Mallard: PR

Shoveler: PR

Garganey: PR

Griffon vulture: soaring over the valley between Filousa and Arminou (Dhiarizos Valley)

Marsh harrier: AP; AD; PR; PH

Hen harrier: hunting along the slopes at the eastern end of AD

Kestrel: very common

Eleonora falcon: Mandria beach

Red-footed falcon: Lower Dhiarizos Valley; on the radio mast hill west of and above AD

Peregrine: Nest with two youngs + adult in Dhiarizos Valley

Chukar: common in grassy country

Black francolin: common in open country with tall grass or herbs, thus at VNI daily

Quail: Akrotiri Gravel Pits

Moorhen: very common in fresh water lakes

Coot: PR

Black-winged stilt: ASL; Zakaki Marsh

Stone curlew: Mandria dunes, two birds on several occasions; heard at nighttime at VNI

Collared pratincole: Zakaki Marsh

Black-winged pratincole: Zakaki Marsh

Ringed plover: ASL

Kentish plover: ASL

Little stint: Larnaca Salt Lake; ASL

Broad-billed sandpiper: ASL

Green sandpiper: AP

Wood-sandpiper: common at fresh water lakes

Common sandpiper: AP; AD; ASL

Marsh sandpiper: ASL

Black-tailed godwit: AD

Great snipe: PR

Ruff: Larnaca Salt Lake, ASL; PR, Zakaki Marsh

Yellow-legged gull: common both at the sea shore and at fresh water

Whiskered tern: AD

White-winged black tern: AD; PH

Woodpigeon: very common

Collared dove: very common

Turtle dove: Mandria coast, resting in hedges and feeding on the fields in great numbers

Great spotted cuckoo: Fairly common in Dhiarizos Valley; PH

Little owl: On isolated rocky outcrop just west of Nata ford

Scops owl: Every evening at VNI + heard calling in the daytime in many different places

Swift: common

Pallid swift: PH; AD; AP – seemed to be common

Alpine swift: PH; AP; AD

Hoopoe: widespread but apparently not very common

Bee-eater: Very numerous, an almost constant stream of migrating birds flying over, day

after day

Roller: Fairly numerous

Crested lark: common

Bank swallow: AP

Barn swallow: very common

Red-rumped swallow: widespread

House-martin: common

Tawny pipit: Dune-meadow at Mandria, probably breeding

Meadow-pipit: CS

Yellow wagtail: Mandria; PR

Wren: Troodos Mt.
